The Board of Ethics is clearly in violation of its own mandated purpose, which is to “receive and initiate complaints” and “conduct hearings on violations and render opinions.”
There was no legitimate basis for a recent deferral of the ethics complaint filed against Mayor Billy Kenoi. An upcoming court hearing on Kenoi’s criminal case should have no relevance to the Board of Ethics and its mandated duty.
The Board of Ethics, like the Police Commission, is not for those who are squeamish about fulfilling their duties. It is a disservice not only to the complainant but to the community when a board fails to fulfill its entrusted responsibilities.

How is it that someone who is not at home during the day, and their dogs get loose and try to bite small kids, cause an elderly woman to fall into a drainage canal, attack a man riding his horse, all going on for months, and the police are called multiple times and provided the location/home of the animals, but nothing happens?
I understand our outstanding men in blue have a lot more important things to do than answer dog calls and might not be able to show up until hours after the call.
But when it continues, and the authorities know where and who the owners are, and nothing happens? Does someone know someone or does it just not matter if it’s not your neighborhood?

Support for veto
Gov. David Ige did the correct thing by vetoing the bill to give Maui hospital employees a huge severance payment because the facilities were sold to a private company.
This happens all the time when one entity is purchased by another.
Good job, governor.
